Over 500k migrants and refugees arrive via Mediterranean

Since the beginning of the year 522,134 migrants and refugees have arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

2,892 people lost their lives on this route in their an attempt to reach the continent.

Most migrants and refugees arrived in Greece - 388,324, while 130,891 reached Italy, reports TASS.

Most of those in Greece are Syrians (175,375) and Afghans (50,177) while 30,708 Eritreans and 15,113 Nigerians came to Italy.

According to the International Organization for Migration ( IOM) from September 17 until today the number of migrants and refugees in Europe increased by almost 49,000.
