Officials of the new government in Kiev, meanwhile, are claiming that this represents "an armed invasion" and accuse Russia of "aggression." The Russian Black Sea Fleet rejected the allegations that the armed men are its members.

RT describes the gunmen who raided the airport as "reminiscent of those who the day before occupied government and parliament buildings in Crimea," as they are similarly dressed and look like "local Russians."

Russian flags and a banner reading, "Crimea is Russia," are now displayed on those buildings.

An eyewitness in Simferopol told Reuters that the men were in full combat gear, with rifles and machine guns, freely entering and exit the control tower.

They were joined by local residents in this autonomous region of Ukraine.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to resume talks with Ukraine on economic and trade relations and to consult with international partners, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the G8, on financial aid, according to a statement posted on the Kremlin website.

The statement noted that Putin also ordered the Russian government to consider the request from Crimea to send humanitarian aid.

Ousted pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is now in Russia where he is expected to hold a press conference on Friday, as fears grow that conflict could break out on the peninsula of Crimea.
