EP: Protect Ukraine's unity and territorial integrity

"The EP calls on all parties and third countries to protect the unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and reminds that the existing borders of Ukraine are guaranteed by the Budapest Memorandum, signed by the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom", says the resolution supported by the five main political groups in the EP.

The EP on the same occasion urged Moscow to adopt "a constructive attitude and refrain from pressure directed at the sovereign rights of neighboring states to freely decide about their future."

At the same time, the resolution warned the transitional government in Kiev "not to take any action that could lead to ethnic and language divisions and to safeguard the unity of the country."

Lawmakers asked the European Commission and the EU Council to give Ukraine "a clear prospect of EU membership."

The resolution was passed amid heightened tensions in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and where a majority of the population is Russian-speaking.

Armed persons on Thursday seized the buildings of the local parliament and government and displayed Russian state symbols. On the other side of the border, Russian troops are conducting massive drills.

Warnings and expressions of concern about possible Russian intervention in Ukraine were heard on Wednesday and today from top officials of the European Union, NATO, and the United States.
