ROME, BRUSSELS The implementation of an agreement reached on Iran in Geneva removes the reason for the U.S. of missile defense system in Europe, said Russian FM Sergei Lavrov. “If the Iran deal is put into practice, the stated reason for the construction of the defense shield will no longer apply,” Lavrov told journalists in Rome, RT reported. Implementation of Iran deal "removes reason for U.S. shield" Iran and foreign ministers of six countries reached the agreement by which Iran will limit the activities within its nuclear program and allow international experts further inspection, and in turn see easing of the economic sanctions. The first phase should last six months, at in that time Iran will freeze its entire nuclear program, while the U.S. and the EU will ease sanctions in place against the country. During the same period negotiations will continue in order to reach a final agreement on peaceful nuclear activities of Iran, said the RIA Novosti news agency. The agency also quoted an unnamed representative of NATO who said that the missile defense system in Europe was needed "to protect against several potential aggressors, and not from a specific country." "We know that more than 30 countries have or are acquiring ballistic missile technology that could be used to carry not only ordinary warheads, but also weapons of mass destruction. That is why NATO's missile defense system does not refer to a specific country. It is about protection from a real and growing threat, and for a real threat for we need real protection," the unnamed official was quoted as saying in response to Lavrov's statement. RIA Novosti noted that NATO and the United States previously said that the system was needed in Europe "to deter threats from North Korea and Iran," and that the issue has for years strained U.S.-Russia relations. Russia and NATO formally agreed to collaborate on the missile shield during the summit in Lisbon in 2010, but that cooperation has not been realized, partly because Russia is demanding legal guarantees that the system will not be aimed at Russia's nuclear deterrence capabilities.
