The lower house of the Spanish parliament has passed a resolution denying Catalonia the right to hold a referendum on the sovereignty of that autonomous region.

MARDRID The lower house of the Spanish parliament has passed a resolution denying Catalonia the right to hold a referendum on the sovereignty of that autonomous region. As reported by ITAR-TASS, the non-binding resolution was proposed by the Union, Progress and Democracy party. Spanish parliament against Catalonia's referendum The resolution states that "a part of the citizens cannot, under any pretext, deal with the issue of territorial integrity of the country," and that "the authorities have no right to deprive citizens living in a certain part of the territory of freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of Spain." It is also stated that "only all of the Spanish people have the right to decide on the territorial integrity of the country." The resolution was supported by the ruling People's Party and the opposition Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, although the Catalan socialists from that caucus abstained from voting. Against were MPs from the coalition United Left and the nationalist Party of Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia. According to Spanish experts, the adoption of the resolution, which has no binding force, shows an increase in the conflict between the central authorities and the autonomous regions with strong nationalist sentiment, the news agency reported.
