The association stated in a press release that data from the United States and European countries show that the number of registered cases of coronavirus under the age of 18 is constantly increasing in absolute numbers and in terms of participation in the total number of patients.

"As more children become ill, there are more who have a more severe clinical picture and require hospital treatment. There has also been a slight increase in the most severe forms of multi-systemic inflammatory response (MIS-C)," the pediatrician said in a statement.

They remind that the characteristic of the previous epidemic wave, in which the delta strain was dominant, was the increase in the number of infected children compared to the previous one, and as they state, it is now certain that the omicron strain will affect the population under 18 even more.

"The largest number of sick and hospitalized children in the countries affected by the omicron strain is under the age of 4. It is especially worrying that the numbers are increasing in countries with the percentage of vaccinated significantly higher than Serbia," said the Association of Pediatricians.

The only way to protect the category of children aged 0-4 is to vaccinate everyone in their environment. The Association of Pediatricians of Serbia therefore once again appeals to vaccinate and receive a booster dose of parents who have not done so. In the same context, the Association appeals to children over the age of 12 are vaccinated, as well as to consider a proposal for children over the age of 12 to receive a third, booster dose of the COVID vaccine", pediatricians said.
