World Cup: Serbia win thanks to stunning free kick goal

Serbia's national football squad won their first game of the FIFA 2018 World Cup by defeating Costa Rica 1-0 in Samara's Cosmos Arena.

The only goal of the match was scored in the second half by Serbia Captain Aleksandar Kolarov. The Roma defender executed a perfect free kick from 25 meters, past a helpless Costa Rica and Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Later on Sunday in Serbia's Group E, Brazil will face Switzerland. Serbia's next game is against Switzerland on June 22.

The FIFA World Cup - the planet's greatest sporting event - kicked off on Thursday in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, with the host nation, Russia, beating Saudi Arabia 5-0, while Uruguay was better than Egypt (1-0) in Russia's Group A.

Iran defeated Morocco (1-0), while Spain and Portugal drew their match (3-3) in Group B. In Group C, France and Denmark secured three points each by beating Australia and Peru, respectively - both games ended 1-0.

In Group G, Iceland and Argentina drew (1-1), while Croatia beat Nigeria 2-0.

32 squads who qualified for the World Cup are split in eight groups, and will each play three matches in the group stage. Two top-ranked squads in each group will progress to the last 16 knock-out phase of the competition.

The final World Cup game will be played in Moscow on July 15.
