Of the confirmed cases, eight have been reported in the territory of the City of Belgrade, three in the South Banat District and one in the North Backa District.

The West Nile virus infection was first officially registered in the territory of Serbia at the end of July 2012. It is a seasonal, mosquito-borne disease.

The incubation period lasts from two to 14 days and most people (80 to 90 percent) exhibit no symptoms. 10 to 20 percent of those infected have flu-like symptoms, with sudden onset of fever, headache, throat, back, muscle and joint pain, tiredness, mild transient rashes, and enlarged lymph nodes.

In 0.2 percent of patients under the age of 65, and in two percent of those over 65, a neuroinvasive form of the disease develops, which requires hospital treatment. The symptoms include headache, stiff neck, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, weakness of the muscles, and paralysis.
