Lawyers say negotiations with ministry "collapsed"

"The Justice Ministry, during the talks, did not express willingness to amend the Law on Public Notaries and accompanying laws, even though the demands of the Bar Association of Serbia are based on respect for the constitution, the law and the guaranteed human and civil rights of the citizens of Serbia", reads a statement issued by the Bar Association.

The statement adds that representatives of the ministry did not refute the Bar Association's arguments, but neither did they give "a properly argued response" to them.

Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic said on Monday he does not expect progress to be made in the talks with the lawyers' representatives by the end of 2014.

He once again reiterated that the lawyers' strike had "inflicted serious damage on the judiciary and that two issues contested by the Bar Association should not be a reason to completely block the judicial system."

In a statement for the Belgrade-based broadcaster TV Pink, he said that a solution to the problem could be found, "but not in the next couple of days." Selakovic added he did not believe a deal would be reached by the end of the year - "which does not mean it won't happen after New Year's."
