A storm that hit Serbia late on Wednesday and heavy rain that continued to fall into Thursday morning are threatening the thermal power plant Kostolac.

Storm floods power plant area, several towns

The situation is particularly difficult at the Drmno strip mine field that has been under water since a previous storm on July 23.

The A2 Blok (block) of the Kostolac A plant has been offline since this morning. The water is endangering machines and equipment, rendering them unusable, while access roads to the area have also been cut off.

Tanjug reported that Kostolac saw 200 liters of rainfall per square meter in the past ten days alone.

Since July 23, the power plant is operating under a state of emergency.

During the major flooding that affected Serbia in May, foreign specialist teams were deployed to defend the plant from the rising water.

The storm that late on Wednesday hit Serbia was part of the same system that earlier in the day wreaked havoc in neighboring Croatia.

Heavy rain, strong wind, and thunderstorms were reported from many areas of the country. 160 liters of rain per square meter fell in Vršac in northeastern Serbia, flooding some areas of the town and some roads, including that between Vršac and Veliko Središte.

In Topola, central Serbia, local authorities declared a state of emergency after the storm damaged "all local and village roads," according to the municipal president, Dragan Jovanović.
