Gale force winds, snowdrifts wreak havoc on roads

Dozens of people were evacuated by military helicopters after snowdrifts stranded them on the Zrenjanin-Belgrade road.

In Belgrade, a barge restaurant broke loose in the storm and collided with another, before stopping downstream.

The authorities on Friday decided to suspend river traffic on the Danube.

The wind had gusts of up to 83 kilometers per hour in the capital, ripping out trees in some areas. There have been no reports of casualties.

The Public Company Roads of Serbia (Putevi Srbije) has issued an advisory urging the citizens "not to take trips unless they had to" - as in addition to high winds and snowdrifts, ice has formed on some roads.

Drivers are advised to use winter equipment for their vehicles and adjust their speed to road conditions.

Gale force winds are forecast to persist today and on Saturday, before subsiding for the rest of the weekend.
