Snowdrifts trap dozens in cars on northern road

All traffic was halted there around 21:00 CET on Thursday. A man who identified himself as Jovan Jovanović spoke to RTS on the phone to say that he was on the road and that "some thirty cars" were in front of his, unable to move.

Considering that some of the vehicles are buses, it is believed that dozens may be trapped.

MUP Sector for Emergency Situations official Goran Nikolić confirmed for B92 that some 50 vehicles have been trapped on this road since last night, but could not say how many people are there.

Nikolićs aid that that last night 40 students, several women and elderly, "all those who wished to," had been evacuated. He explained that many did not want to leave their vehicles and that weather conditions are such that rescuers now have trouble reaching them.

He also said that rescue teams are working on the ground and facing great difficulties in their efforts to clear the road.

According to announcements today, the Serbian Army joined the efforts to rescue those stranded on the road. The passengers from the vehicles are reported to have gathered in two buses that have heating, and their evacuation is under way on Friday afternoon.

A state of emergency has been declared in the territory of the municipality of Zrenjanin.
