The library, now one of the collections at the museum, was established in the period between 1940 and 1980, and includes books that were personally owned by Broz or presented to him by authors, leaders and delegations, as well as publications obtained for the former Yugoslav president. The collection is very diverse, as it consists of books of history, arts, literature, belles letters, books about philosophy, religion and politics, but also old and rare books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and lexicons. Last month, the library was awarded the status of a cultural resource due to its cultural, scientific and historic value, and the valuable works it contains make it a part of not only the Yugoslav, but also the world cultural heritage, the museum said. The library contains 1,747 signed books, with those signed by prominent individuals such as Winston Churchill, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sekou Toure, Yasser Arafat, Milovan Djilas, Mosa Pijade and Dobrica Cosic among the particularly valuable ones. Books accompanied by letters, attachments and seals of their owners are also precious. Books with special technical and artistic appointments make up an outstanding part of the library, as other copies are in the possession of just a few heads of state. These include the works of Iran's Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, with the gold relief on the covers bearing the image of the shah. Marxist literature has a prominent place in the library, as does a rich collection of military literature. Notable standouts among the old and rare books in the library include a book by famous engraver Simon Thomassin from 1694, showcasing the decoration of the Versailles, a Russian dictionary from 1789, Danica Ilirska from 1842 (edited by Ljudevit Gaj), Voltaire's works published between 1877 and 1885, and a copy of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1931.
