BELGRADE The probable number of productive years of life lost due to premature death was 410,622 in 2010, caused mostly by cancer, heart disease and violent death. This is according to the latest issue of the Demografski Pregled (Demographic Review) publication. PYLL mostly due to cancer and cardiovascular disease According to the magazine, published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, premature mortality is a concept that is introduced through a relatively new indicator - potential years of life lost (PYLL), which is an estimate of the average years a person would have lived if he or she had not died prematurely. The concept focuses on the social and economic consequences of mortality and it gives more weight to deaths among younger individuals, which shows that it is more important for society to prevent the death of younger individuals than older ones. In 2010, Serbia potentially lost 64 years of life per 1,000 population due to premature mortality causes, and six decades ago, it used to lose six times more years, or 424 per 1,000 population. Analyses by gender show that the number of potential years of life lost is higher among men, but PYLL is showing a downward trend in both sexes. PYLL in women was down by more than eight times, while in men it was about five times lower in 2010 compared to 1950. Starting from 1981, PYLL resulting from cancer increased from 20.7 percent to 38.5 percent in women, while in men, the percentage rose from 15.1 to 26.9 percent. Men are more prone to cardiovascular disease and are three to four times more exposed to the risk of violent death. PYLL from violent deaths is highest in men between 25 and 34 years old, while in women, the age is between 45 to 54 years old. The report states, however, that the declining trend in PYLL in Serbia over the last 60 years has been considerably lower than in the most developed European countries, primarily due to reduced mortality rates in infants and children up to five years old.
