March for Babies to be organized on New Year’s Day

The Street of Open Heart will be traditionally held on January 1 and a humanitarian action dubbed March for Babies will be held as a part of the manifestation.

The Street of Open Heart will be traditionally held on January 1 and a humanitarian action dubbed March for Babies will be held as a part of the manifestation. Serbian President Boris Tadic will join the campaign and declare 2012 the year of the babies. March for Babies to be organized on New Year’s Day The Street of Open Heart, which has been held in Svetogorska St. on every January 1 since 1988, this year grew into the City of Open Heart, that 11 Belgrade municipalities will take part in. Just like previous years, the manifestation will be humanitarian. The March for Babies will be held as a part of B92 Fund’s Battle for Babies campaign, which aims at raising funds for the purchase of other equipment for babies, after buying almost 200 new baby incubators. The president will wish the citizens a happy New Year in front of the Atelje 212 theater at noon, together with Atelje 212 Director Kokan Mladenovic, Tourist Organization of Belgrade Director Dejan Veselinov, Stari Grad Municipal President Mirjana Bozidarevic, Belgrade Chamber of Commerce President Milan Jankovic, B92 Fund President Veran Matic and City of Belgrade representatives. The participants, organizers and parents with babies will then start the March for Babies from daily Politika headquarters and symbolically open all stands in the Street of Open Heart. The funds from the sale of symbolic red bibs and other souvenirs will be used to purchase necessary equipment for babies. Actors and singers, including Dejan Cukic, Gorica Popovic, Ivan Jeftovic and Dusica Novakovic, brass and string orchestras will take part in the main program and organizers have also announced street performances, puppet shows, circus, magicians and animators. The organizers have invited everybody to come and take part in the humanitarian action. The Atelje 212 director told a press conference on Wednesday that the manifestation would, aside from the carnival, provide concrete help to those who needed it the most. “Citizens of Belgrade can participate with their babies in the March for Babies that will take place in the Street of Open Heart, but they can also donate certain funds, as much as they can. They can buy small symbolical bibs that will cost RSD 100 or more, depending on how much people can give. There will be many souvenirs that are very popular. What is the most important for us is that there are many citizens of Belgrade there and many babies in the Street of Open Heart and in the March for Babies,” the B92 Fund president stressed. “In order to increase the birth rate it is necessary to make progress in the economy,” Matic said and added that the state should reduce taxes on baby food and clothes in order to make the parenting easier. City of Belgrade councilor Zeljko Ozegovic presented Matic with a symbolic check to RSD 100,000. The money was raised by Ozegovic and Palilula Municipal President Danilo Basic in a humanitarian action. The Belgrade Chamber of Commerce president stated that not only parents and small children should join the March for Babies, but everybody who wanted to show good will and humanity and give their contribution. Even though more than 180 new baby incubators have been purchased thanks to the Battle for Babies campaign, the humanitarian action continues. The B92 Fund invites everybody to come to the Street of Open Heart on January 1, 2012. The B92 campaign will in the future focus on raising funds for the purchase of necessary equipment for prematurely born babies, maternity wards and for improvement of parents’ position in Serbia and on repealing taxes on baby food and clothes.
