The Cyrillic internet domain name should have a meaningful connection with the term Serbia, it should be recognizable, and as short and simple as possible. This was heard in Belgrade today at a round table dedicated to choosing the first internet domain in Serbia's national script. Serbia to get Cyrillic internet domain name The new domain should represent Serbia to the world in the right way, the participants agreed. Although the internet is 40 years old, the decision to allow registration of internet domains in non-Latin scripts was made only last year. “Even though the whole procedure has started a little over a month ago, the first phase is currently under way and the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS) has initiated a debate about possible suggestions at forum.rnids.rs, anyone can express their idea,” said member of RNIDS Working Group for Selection of the Cyrillic Domain Milanko Vasic. The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Center for the Study and Use of Modern Technologies, Deacon Oliver Subotic, pointed out that the SPC supports the initiative which has great cultural importance. Speaking about the use of the new domain by the SPC, Subotic stressed that it would assume the Cyrillic domain for its "internal mission" – that is, would use it "among the Serb people in the area" while presentations aiming at the outside and non-Orthodox world would keep the .rs domain.
