Serbia participates in Earth Hour
Serbia joined the global Earth Hour action on Saturday night by turning off all decorative lighting on state and various other institutions for an hour.

Serbia joined the global Earth Hour action on Saturday night by turning off all decorative lighting on state and various other institutions for an hour. This is the second year in a row in which Serbia participated, along with 120 other countries around the world, in this action. Serbia participates in Earth Hour The hour-long "black-out" is meant to highlight the problems of global warming, climate changes and pollution. The symbolic act of turning off the lights of the city parliament and lighting candles in the shape of the number 60 symbolizes an hour without pollution. It also is an action to support energy conservation. Lights were also turned off at the Kalemegdan fortress, Nikola Tesla Museum, St. Sava Cathedral, and city bridges in support of the action. The Earth Hour action was organized for the first time in Sydney in 2007. The goal of the action is to organize countries, institutions, and individuals in the fight against these environmental problems. Belgrade is not the only city in Serbia that participated in the action, however, Novi Sad, Nis, Sombor, Zrenjanin, Kragujevac and close to 40 other Serbian cities and towns also participated.
