The old internet domain for Serbia “.yu” is due to be scrapped tonight at midnight, though there have been calls for an extension of another year or two. There are still about 4,000 sites working with this domain extension. End to .yu domain looming The current extension for Serbia, “.rs,” has more than 50,000 registered sites. However, the national registry for internet domains has asked the international internet registry, Icann, for an extension for the “.yu” domain of one or two years. “Essentially, they are all registered, but they need to have everything that is on their domains, all the information, the email address they used, to be available as long as possible,” Serbian internet registry official Jelena Opacic said. “There has been a lot of talk in the public about why an extension is being asked for, that there has been enough of Yu-nostalgia. We have a new domain, which we should be using, and that makes sense,” she said, adding that the registry is trying to get everyone to switch over to the new domain extension.
