The first Pride Parade in Belgrade is expected to be held on August 23, according to the Gay Straight Alliance. However, the organizational committee of the parade denied that any date has been set and has cut the Gay Straight Alliance out of any further organization because of what they called “seriously endangering the safety of the participators and organizers of the manifestation”. The announcement of the date has caused disputes between organizers, but has not lessened their intentions of holding the event. The Gay Straight Alliance stated that as the initiator of the parade, its has submitted to the MUP a request to hold the rally, scheduled for August 23, while the organizational committee stated that announcing the date compromises the safety or the participators and organizers. The Pride Parade has always been a test of tolerance in whatever location one is held, our reporter says. Officials of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population in Serbia and human rights organizations are organizing the Pride Parade with the support of the police and government. The Gay Straight Alliance and the organizations with the organizational committee agree that the parade should be held during the same year in which the Anti-Discrimination law was adopted. The organizational committee will continue to work on organizing the pride parade, which will probably be held on the same day that pop star Madonna is scheduled to perform in Belgrade, who has long been an icon to the gay community.
