The Youth and Sport Ministry will propose the adoption of an act whereby candidates for a national sports pension must sign a declaration of loyalty to Serbia. Speaking in regards to the applications by two boxers from Kosovo to receive Serbian pensions based on the success they achieved by competing under the flag of the former Yugoslavia, Minister Snezana Samardzic-Markovic said these candidates would require "an extra document"—a signed statement of loyalty to Serbia. "Sportsmen to sign loyalty declaration" "In addition to a nomination put forward by the respective alliance (The Boxing Alliance of Serbia) and a certificate of citizenship issued up to six months prior to the date of presentation, Memet Bogujevci and Nusret Redzepi will require that document as well, which would mean that they do not recognize the so-called independent state of Kosovo," the minister said in an interview with Belgrade daily Politika, published on Friday. The paper says that the ministry has confirmed that the documentation for Bogujevci, who still lives in Kosovo, and Redzepi, who has lived in Germany for the last 10 years, has arrived, though the situation concerning another boxer, Aziz Salihu, remains unclear. Although one Belgrade daily has already published an interview with Salihu, who is “burning with desire” to receive a Serbian pension, the boxer told Politika that this was pure fiction and that he did not need a pension from Serbia. The ministry said that there had earlier been similar applications by Montenegrin citizens living in Belgrade for a long time. “We tried to set some interim provisions for them too that were linked to the Law on Citizenship,” Samardzic-Markovic added. "When I became minister, I established a Commission for Revision of National Honors, as there had been certain abuses. At the commission’s recommendation, we’ll propose a slightly revised provision,“ she said. According to Politika, the Youth and Sports Ministry has said that none of the athletes entitled to receive a pension have waived that right. However, there are those who have given their pensions to charity, such as basketball player Vlade Divac, whose entire pension is redirected to his home town of Prijepolje.
