EU assists development of regions

Outgoing Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic, DS, and head of the EC delegation in Belgrade Josep Lloveras on Monday signed donation contracts worth EUR 2.5mn. This EU assistance is designed to aid regional development, via agencies based in Kragujevac, Leskovac, Uzice, Zrenjanin and Zajecar. EU assists development of regions Speaking in a news conference at the seat of the Serbian government, Djelic said that the contracts represented the beginning of IPA regional and local government development projects, the total value of which is some EUR 24mn. He said that the government and the European Union had signed the IPA framework financial agreement last year, for Serbia to use through 2011, the EU pre-accession funds worth EUR 1bn. Djelic said that Serbia had to invest a lot of effort towards achieving a balanced regional development of the country and added that the difference in salaries between developed and undeveloped areas was four to one, unemployment rate six to one, while the GDP figure is at 22 to one.
