47th October Salon opens

This year a record number of exhibition spaces will see a record number of foreign artists display their works – 106. They come from 33 countries, while more than 80 were invited as guests.

The Salon’s director Sava Popović said, speaking in the Belgrade Town Hall, that only African artists will be missing.

He also said the youngest participant is a 15-year-old Aborigine girl from Australia.

Rene Blok said the manifestation received great support from northern European countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Germany.

“I have experience with Nordic countries, and there was a good opportunity for a dialog between the northern and southeastern Europe”, Blok said. According to him, the world lately took a turn for the worse, politically speaking, became a more hostile place, while the Salon strives to show it in a friendly light.

The October Salon was established in 1960 as a manifestation displaying the best fine arts works, after 1967 turning into a significant event encompassing contemporary trends in applied arts as well.

Until 2005, the Salon was exclusively domestic in nature, when the founders, City Assembly and the Salon’s Council, decided to open it for international works of art.
