Radical Islamist arrested on Bosnia-Serbia border

The border police in eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina have arrested Enes Mesic, a radical Islamist and a former member of Islamic State.

Mesic was arrested while attempting to illegally cross the border and rejoin this terrorist organization, a border police statement said on Wednesday.

A person has been arrested in the area of ​​Rudo and has been turned over to the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), border police spokeswoman Sanela Djukovic confirmed for Croatia's Hina agency, Tanjug is reporting.

The police gave no other details, beside saying that the suspect was "on the list of persons under surveillance."

Media reports said Mesic was last October sentenced to three years in prison for fighting in the ranks of the terrorist organization Islamic State.

N1 is reporting that he was arrested on Tuesday near a gas station close to the town of Rudo, while attempting to illegally cross into Serbia.

Although Mesic was sentenced in October 2016 and is considered to be one of the most radical members of the Salafi movement, at the time of the arrest, he was yet to start serving his sentence.
