More than 20,000 gathered to demand the government's resignation after 32 people died in a fire in a Bucharest night club over the weekend - one of the deadliest accidents in the Romanian capital in several decades.

The protest's leaders said that the tragedy occurred due to corruption and poor security controls. Ponta was earlier accused of corruption and is due to stand trial.

"Ponta has resigned, because someone has to take responsibility for what has happened. This is a serious issue and we promise to quickly find a solution for this situation," head of the ruling Social Democratic Party Liviu Dragnea said in parliament.
