"By protecting Hungary, we are protecting the EU," he told the state radio.

Hungary last month announced it would build a fence along its southern border with Serbia to prevent illegal migrants from third countries reaching its soil.

Speaking about the Greek crisis, Orban said his country "would be in the same position now had there not been unity in 2010," and had his government not secured a two-third majority, MTI quoted him as saying.

Orban added he had "strong sympathies for the Greeks" and was "rooting for them."
