"Serbia knew about plans to build border fence"

Serbia was familiar with all the options, including the construction of a border fence to prevent the flow of illegal immigrants, say Hungarian authorities.

"We have been in regular contact with the Serbian authorities for more than a year, as well as with ministers of police, foreign affairs and the prime minister of Serbia," said a spokesman of the Hungarian government for international relations Zoltan Kovacs, and added:

"On the level of experts and ministers all options were on the table the last few weeks and months, including the construction of a wall on border," he told the N1 outlet.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on Wednesday that Hungary will build a 4-meter high fence along its border with Serbia to prevent the influx of illegal migrants.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that he was surprised and shocked by this announcement, stating that the solution was not in building walls, especially since Serbia was not to blame for this problem.

Vucic also said that he would discuss it with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and EU officials, adding that this was "primarily a question for the European Union, because Serbia is a transit country."
