The government of Chancellor Angela Merkel said, as stated, that it was not interested in NATO's expansion at this point, and, according to this article, this was officially confirmed by spokesman Steffen Seibert.
The newspaper writes that Seibert said the western military alliance's enlargement was "not a topic."
"The federal government does not see the need at this stage for further enlargement of NATO to the east. That for us is not on the list of necessities, although Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, and Macedonia seek to become members," said Seibert.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Đukanović recently met in Brussels and agreed "that it would be a good" if the issue of enlargement made it to the the summit's agenda.
