Hungary opposed to sanctions against Russia

He said that for the moment, the Ukrainian crisis and political sanctions have not caused harm to the Hungarian nuclear deal with Moscow and that he hoped it would remain so.

Hungary, an EU member-state, secures about 80 percent of its gas imports from Russia, and has recently signed a contract worth USD 10 billion with the Russian state-owned atomic energy giant Rosatom to extend the Hungarian nuclear power plant Paks, the main producer of electricity in the country, Reuters said in its report.

Rosatom on Wednesday warned that some international agreements could suffer because of Western sanctions, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia is also the largest trading partner of Hungary outside the EU, with a turnover of EUR 2.55 billion last year.

Based on the messages that arrived last week from former communist EU member states, it can be concluded that their leaders would not support the introduction of a new round of sanctions on trade and economic relations with Moscow.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that the West has not reached the stage which involves the imposition of economic sanctions on Russia and that she had no objections to German companies working with Russia.
