The Central Election Commission announced that the plebiscite failed due to the insufficient turnout. Referendum to oust Romanian president fails At least half of all registered voters had to turn out in order for the voting to be valid, however, only 46.13 percent did so. Of those, 87.55 voted in favor of dismissing Basescu, while 11.12 were against. The new left-wing parliamentary majority, gathered around the Social-Liberal Union of Premier Victor Ponte, voted in July to impeach Basescu, accusing him of having violated the Constitution taking over the powers of prime minister, while constantly meddling in government affairs, as well as of contempt of parliament and other state institutions. Basescu's Democratic Liberal Party,, which lost the April elections, sharply criticized the procedure of the ruling majority and called its members and supporters not to vote in the referendum. Basescu, after the closing of the polls, said voters had "rejected the coup" by not turning out, and that upon returning to the presidential palace, he would work to create "a sense of reconciliation in Romania's society".
