The organization for the protection of Romas in Romania supported pop star Madonna’s message against Roma discrimination, which she made at her recent concert. “We respect the stance of Madonna, the activist for human rights, and we see her message as a step forward in the fight for the promotion of equality among people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion and gender,” the organization stated. Madonna shows support for Romas in Romania Madonna stopped her concert in Bucharest for a short protest and to express her “sadness” regarding the discrimination against Romas, adding that “no one should be discriminated against.” Thousands of the 60,000 in attendance, however, whistle in protest of the statement, though Madonna did not react. There are Roma musicians in Madonna’s band and a Roma dancer accompanies her on tour as well. Officially, there are 500,000 Romas living in Romania, though estimates say that the real number is closer to two million.
