The Croatian government said that the new blocking if its EU association efforts by Holland and the UK because of Hague cooperation are “technical questions.” Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz confirmed that there is progress in Zagreb’s cooperation with the court. Hague cooperation – Zagreb's new EU hurdle? However, he said this progress amounted to Croatia admitting that there are documents regarding artillery and special police units that could compromise the Croatian generals who are on trial for war crimes allegedly committed during and after 1995 Operation Storm against that country's ethnic Serbs. Several EU member-states confirmed that they would block Croatia’s further progress on the road to EU integration because of the lack of cooperation with the tribunal, according to reports. Holland and the United Kingdom called for a pause of a couple weeks in the process so that Brammertz could confirm whether Zagreb is willing to fulfill the agreement for transferring the documents in question. Croatian government spokesperson Zlatko Mehun said the fact an association chapter was not opened between Zagreb and Brussels is just a “technical postponement” that happens often in the association processes. In the next several weeks, doubts of the European countries in Croatia’s full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal should be removed, Mehun said, adding that he is convinced that the process will continue soon. Croatian media, however, are stating that the entrance of the country into the EU in 2011 is not certain, and that the year 2014 is being mentioned as more realistic. The media sees this blockade and the Slovenian stalling of the ratification of Croatia's NATO entry because of the border issue as failures of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader’s government, which lists entrance into the EU and NATO as its priorities, even over the current economic crisis.
