The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), which forms that country's government, has decided to postpone the decision on its candidate for after Orthodox Christmas.

Vujanović is a close ally of former president and prime minister Milo Đukanović, who led the country to independence last year, to later step down.

The party base is said to back Đukanović to become the next president.

But in an interview published by Podgorica daily Vijesti today, Vujanović said he had no doubt that he could win in the first round, and explained that his bid would be "only natural" if Đukanović decided not to run.

The date for the presidential vote in Montenegro is to be set in mid January.

The winner of the ballot will be the first president since Montenegro renewed its statehood last year.
