Montenegro to join UN today

Montenegro to join UN today

The UN General Assembly is expected to adopt a resolution today for accepting Montenegro into its ranks. Austria 's UN Ambassador Gerhard Pfanzelter, whose country is heading the EU currently, will present the resolution.

UN General Assembly President Jan Eliasson will then call on the Assembly to adopt the resolution. Once the resolution is passed, the Montenegrin flag will be raised in front of the UN headquarters in New York City.

Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović, Foreign Affairs Minister Miodrag Vlahović and UN Special Envoy Nebojša Kaluđerović will attend the ceremony along with Eliasson and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Montenegro is the first nation to be accepted into the UN since East Timor, back in 2002.
