Europe is unjust, Albania should give us passports - Thaci

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has asked Albanian President Ilir Meta to allow residents of Kosovo the possibility of acquiring citizenship of Albania.

Thaci said he did this because Europe has been unjust toward "the Kosovars."

"Albania is the only hope," Thaci said during a joint press conference with Meta, who is in Pristina, RTS reported on Wednesday.

In the context of this request, Thaci once again criticized the European Union for conditioning visa liberalization for Kosovo residents.

He also presented "the Order of Independence" to Meta, for his "merits and participation in the process of opening the aspirations and gaining the independence of Kosovo."

Meta said that the award was "a special recognition" for him and the Albanians in Albania.

In a joint statement, Thaci and Meta called for "the continuation of the final phase of the dialogue on the normalization of relations between the state of Kosovo and that of Serbia, inviting a renewed EU engagement and direct participation of the US, with a view to final recognition of Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state by Serbia, as a process that will have positive effects for the entire region."

Thaci and Meta want to see "the symmetric acceleration of the integration processes of all countries in the region, wishing to join the EU and NATO, since integration into the EU and NATO remain deeply political processes, with tremendous impact on the completion of peace processes in the region."

Their goal, the statement said is "drafting a strategic document for Kosovo’s full membership in the EU and NATO."

The statement stressed the need for "the fastest possible visa liberalization between the European Union and Kosovo," and "Kosovo’s commitment to make every effort to resolve in good faith and mutual understanding the issues related to the border marking agreement with its neighbor Montenegro."
