Mihajlovic wants the prime minister and head of the SNS to run in the elections that should take place in the spring as the party's candidate, she told Belgrade daily Blic.

According to her, the SNS has "a number of candidates that could, with great struggle and effort, win," but only Vucic "could win in the first round."

Mihajlovic said that opposition candidates, Vuk Jeremic and Vojislav Seselj, "stand no chance if Vucic is the candidate of the SNS - but anything is possible if the SNS has another candidate."

"We need a convincing victory that would prove Serbia remains politically stable, which is a precondition for further economic growth," she said.

Mihajlovic added that the decision on the party's candidate would be made "in the spring, jointly by Vucic and top SNS officials," and that the presidential hopeful would be chosen based on "whether they can and know how to respond to challenges."

"That decision will be in the best interest of Serbia, not of the SNS. Tomislav Nikolic is to be credited for the SNS victory in 2012, he was a good president in calm times, but different times are coming in our surroundings and in the world. We need a president who can respond to new challenges," she said.

Asked "whether the SNS is ready to risk and put forward Nikolic, even though opinion polls show he would find it difficult to win against Jeremic or Seselj in the second round," Mihajlovic "stressed that the ruling coalition should have a joint candidate, and only Vucic would win in the first round."
