This comes pursuant to the Brussels agreement on telecommunications and a formal letter sent by Serbia.

"This is a historic achievement in the field of telecommunications that strengthens the international entity of Kosovo," the website of the Kosovo government quoted Minister for Dialogue Edita Tahiri as saying.

The head of the Serbian Government's Office for Kosovo and Metohija Marko Djuric said earlier the +383 dialing code was property of Serbia and that it had been assigned to Kosovo as a geographic, rather than an international area.

On December 13, Pristina's Albanian language daily Koha Ditore said that based on the agreement reached in Brussels, Serbia assigned the code +383 "to the geographic area of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija," while the annex of ITU's technical documentation states that the territory is referenced under the name Kosovo, along with an asterisk and a footnote saying that the reference to Kosovo is "without prejudice to its status and is in full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, and the opinion of the ICJ on Kosovo's declaration of independence."
