Serbia yet to receive "official reply" from United States

Sladjana Stankovic and Jovica Stepic were kidnapped in Sabratha, Libya, last November, and killed in that town when the building where they were held hostage came under attack.

Dacic repeated that Serbia had "received assurances from Washington that they did not know there were civilians in that structure."

"They are saying that a change of location had occurred, and that, at that moment, they did not know civilians were there," he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that "Serbia received an informal reply from the CIA" who said they "did not know there were civilians at the location," adding that "an official response will be sought."

Serbian Ambassador to Libya Oliver Potezica and all embassy staff officials will be questioned, Dacic announced earlier today.

This will be done "in order to determine the full truth" about the kidnapping of Sladjana Stankovic and Jovica Stepic, he said.

"Serbia has maintained its embassies in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt in the past period," Dacic told Belgrade-based tabloid Kurir, and added:

"The reasons for this are friendly relations with these countries, a large number of our people who work there and do not want to leave - even though we invited them to leave those countries - as well as our economic interests."

He pointed out that the ambassadors and charges d'affaires in these countries have also "always been against the closure of the embassies."

According to him, this includes Potezica, who after the kidnappings suggested that the embassy in Tripoli should neither be closed nor moved to Tobruk - "because Tripoli has more than 30 embassies, and there are no conditions in Tobruk for embassies, so other countries are not opening them there, either."

The Serbian foreign minister announced "a thorough investigation."

"The full truth and responsibility will be determined about all of this, the estimates, the procedural rules and the procedures on the day of the kidnapping. Both Potezica and all employees of the embassy will be questioned with regard to these events. For that reason a working group has been formed that will shortly propose measures," Dacic said.
