He added that the MUP Gendarmerie has not stepped up its presence in the streets, "but police buildings are specially protected," while officers carrying rifles are only deployed in front of those.

The reason for this measure, said Stefanovic, are incidents in neighboring Bosnia and Macedonia where police stations came under attack.

"We are making daily assessments of the security situation and will not allow citizens to become easy targets," said the minister, remarking that police officers "in other cities worldwide" are also issued with rifles.

Speaking in Belgrade during a ceremony to mark 155 years since the founding of the Serbian Gendarmerie, Stefanovic added that there was "no reason now" to increase its numbers, as the officers serving in the unit "can satisfy security needs," and promised to work on providing them with "better work conditions."
