BELGRADE Former IM Ivica Dacic’s Chief of Staff Branko Lazarevic has denied allegations that he has ever had any ties with drug lord Darko Saric and his gang. The denial was issued by Lazarevic’s lawyer on Friday. Ex-Interior Ministry official denies ties with drug kingpin He said his client, who is now an advisor in the Serbian Embassy in Greece, had lately been exposed to inappropriate, unfounded and false media attacks that had jeopardized his and the integrity of his family. “A series of lies and malicious insinuations have been said about Mr. Branko Lazarevic in your news programs in the last several days. Firstly, Mr. Lazarevic has never been involved in inappropriate and illegal contacts with Saric and members of his group. Secondly, Mr. Lazarevic has never violated his professional obligations during his work in the MUP (Serbian police) and has always acted in accordance with legal regulations and rules of the job. Thirdly, Mr. Lazarevic points out that such media attacks have violated his honor and reputation and that he has been unfoundedly connected to people from criminal circles. Mr. Lazarevic does not want to be a part of any political and media manipulation and announces that he will protect his integrity in judicial institutions,” reads the statement. B92 has seen a report of the Criminal Investigations Police Administration on the existence of ties between Lazarevic and Saric’s criminal group. Prime Minster and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has assessed that the whole case was a “setup”. Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reported on Thursday night that several state officials had met with members of Saric’s gang in 2008 and 2008 and that there were 130 CDs containing evidence of the communication. The special Prosecution should today file a request for collection of evidence of the communication between the state officials and Saric’s associates and a probe into allegations that Lazarevic betrayed official secrets.
