Nikolić’s press office has said that he had met with the patriarch, Metropolitan of Montenegro and Littoral Amfilohije Radović and Bishop of Bačka Irinej.

The SPC dignitaries expressed deep concern over the situation in Kosovo and decision of the Hague Tribunal to acquit Croat Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač and former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander Ramush Haradinaj.

Nikolić stressed that the “state is fully open for active involvement of the SPC in the solving of Serbia’s key issues in the southern Serbian province”, reads the release.

Nikolić conferred with Irinej several times before. He said in June that he met with the patriarch in order to get his blessing and advice as to what he should do in difficult times. At a meeting in July, the president and Irinej discussed Kosovo, situation in the society and participation of the Church in it.
