Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic says he, as a Serbian citizen, is happy about the fact that Serbia has received the EU candidate status. However, he believes that the status itself does not mean anything. Opposition leader “happy about candidate status” He added that it was just one step toward full-fledged membership in the EU. “As a Serb and a Serbian citizen I am happy about the status but I know that everything else is just a show and that the status will not mean anything unless Serbia is ready to move forward, like other countries with the status, and if it stays buried with the government which has been running the country poorly and meaninglessly for the past 12 years,” he told Nikolic told Tanjug. He pointed out that it was good for Serbia to have the EU candidate status and that it would also be good to start the EU accession talks and have access to the EU funds so it could finally start solving piled-up issues, primarily to improve the economic system, agriculture, stop the home currency’s slide against euro. The SNS leader said that the decision on the EU candidate status was expected many years ago and that he was wondering why Serbia had not earlier accepted the conditions it now fulfilled “during the course of one night”.
