Brice Taton’s parents say that his murderers, whether they were football hooligans or not, were wearing shirts and symbols of “barbaric nationalism.” His parents told French daily La Depeche du Midi that “a wild horde attacked Brice and his friends, savagely and for no reason,” while they were sitting in front of a Belgrade café not wearing any team colors. Victim's parents speak out over son’s death “Brice lost his life because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” his parents said. They added that “the Serbian prime minister visited Brice in the hospital, and the president has intervened, and now it’s a state issue.” “The 11 people arrested for the attack include an architect, a law student, and children from good families,” the daily writes. “According to information we’ve received,” Taton’s parents said, “they were violent nationalist activists who were looking to attack the gay parade scheduled for that day.” “That parade was cancelled for fear that it would spiral out of control. And these savages, who have been politically manipulated by extremists who oppose Serbia’s accession to the European Union, went to find other victims—foreigners, first and foremost,” the daily writes. The parents also recalled that one Australian and one Libyan citizen had also been attacked following the attack on their son for the same motives. Asked what punishment they wanted for their son’s killers, the Tatons said that they were looking for 40 years in prison for those over the age of 20, and 20 years for the rest. La Depeche states that the barbaric killing of Taton “is a tragedy that has saddened the city of Toulouse, and its club, and caused a huge stir in both France and Serbia.” “There have been numerous reactions, and in Serbia, Prime Minister Cvetkovic, the foreign and sports ministers, the Belgrade Mayor and Partizan officials have all paid their respects and offered their condolences,” the daily adds. “They are frightened in Serbia by this violence and are demanding that the guilty be brought to justice,” La Depeche concludes.
