U.S. Ambassador to Belgrade Cameron Munter says that differences between Serbia and America over Kosovo should not impede further cooperation. He told Novi Pazar radio station Sto Plus and the Beta news agency that there were issues on which the U.S. and Serbia were in complete agreement. “Differences no barrier to U.S.-Serbia cooperation” “I think we should concentrate on what we agree on, and that is integration into the European Union, prosperity and the nation’s progress,” Munter said, adding that American could certainly help when it came to reform of the institutional system in Serbia. Asked how much the differences over Kosovo could affect relations between Washington and Belgrade, he said that he believed that the issue could be discussed in an open and friendly manner. “There are issues that we think are key to the stability of the region. We are hopeful, even though there are differences over Kosovo. However, all of us, I mean the U.S., Serbia, and our European friends, believe that the most important thing is to ensure the stability of the Balkans and the general future of the people living in this region,” the ambassador underlined. Asked whether the U.S.’s participation in EULEX—the first time the U.S. will be participating in an EU mission—set a precedent for future cooperation between Washington and Brussels in Kosovo, Munter replied that he “would like to say that it is a resumption of strong cooperation with the European Union.” Munster said that EULEX was based on Resolution 1244 and was an important peacekeeping move by the EU for stability and peace in the Balkans. “It is an obligation to implement the rule of law and for it to become a part of the Kosovo institutions and, as I’ve already said, for the rights of everyone to be protected and recognized,” the ambassador said. He said that Washington would continue to be Belgrade’s friend, regardless of which candidate won the U.S. presidential elections on November 4. Cameron Munter (FoNet, archive)
