Serbian reforms have made it a pillar of security in the region, a MUP official told a conference in Slovenia Friday. The level of reforms in the border control sector and introduction of new and secure identity papers, has made Serbia a guarantor of security in the region and EU's partner in achieving collective security, Interior Ministry (MUP) State Secretary Mirjana Orasanin said. Orasanin cited prevention of cross border crime in the region as a major problem, and particularly illegal migrations and human trafficking, as well as inadequately secured borders in the region of Kosovo with Albania and Macedonia, in the zone of UNMIK's responsibility. "What exacerbates the situation even further are extremely well organized and strong criminal groups comprising members of the ethnic Albanian community from Kosovo-Metohija and operating on a European scale," she said. Orasanin added that 70 percent of the total number of illegal migrants identified in Serbia come from Kosovo, and warned that the territory of the southern Serbian province was being used for stockpiling heroine, pointing out that this is a European issue. "Serbia is resolved to secure the highest possible level of state border control, in a way that will enable the security of citizens, protection of their rights and freedoms, and the unimpeded and efficient development of the economy," Orasanin said.
