Tadić puts faith in new government

He said that the negotiating parties settled the problem applying principles of mutual control and division of authority. Tadić explained that the security issue was solved by means of introducing a new body into the system, namely the National Security Council, that would integrate all security departments and security agencies. Tadić himself will coordinate the security services as head of the Council.

“The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has to date been in charge of both defense and interior ministries and all security agencies. The situation is now different as we will introduce mutual control, division of authority and liability to exclude domination of one party,” Tadić explained.

Tadić added that he and Koštunica were going to decide who will be the next BIA chief, as the cabinet deal instructed the appointment of a person that did not belong to any political party.

When asked whether current BIA chief Rade Bulatović was likely to retain his seat, Tadić replied it was very unlikely to happen.

Commenting on the fact that the democratic bloc parties managed to strike a cabinet deal only days ahead of the set deadline, the Democrats leader said that had entered cabinet talks were to share responsibility for it.

Speaking of the deal reached between Koštunica’s DSS and the Radicals regarding Tomislav Nikolić’s candidacy for Parliament speaker, Tadić said he had no knowledge that could happen, even though he never lost sight of that possibility.

Tadić stressed that he continued to negotiate with the DSS bearing in mind Serbia’s interest and respecting the will of the voters who opted for a democratic Serbia.

“If we failed to agree on the government, the state would drift into political agony,” he said.

However, Tadić stressed that foreign pressures had no bearing on his decision to resume cabinet talks.

Tadić voiced hope that the new democratic bloc government would prove successful, and that new partners had to bury the hatchet and work on building mutual trust so as to implement the policy Serbian citizens chosen.
