The debate over the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in men's tennis has divided opinions for years but American Pete Sampras has no doubt that Serbian Novak Djokovic is the one.
"I do think what Novak's done over the past 10 years, winning the majors, being consistent, finishing number one for seven years, to me it's a clear sign that he is the greatest of all time."
"I think he's been more consistent, he's won more events, he's got more majors. I could go on and on talking about his career. I don't think you will see (seven year-end number ones) again."
Those words also reached Novak, who in a conversation with Serbian journalists referred to the words of the former number one.
"I saw that and I planned to call him and thank him, because it really means a lot to me, especially since it comes from him, a man I looked up to a lot when I was a kid on Kopaonik at the age of four or five and dreamed of playing at Wimbledon one day like he played. I dreamed of winning that trophy and being number one in the world. He definitely inspired me to take the racket in my hands, so he definitely has great significance in my career and beginnings," Djokovic said.
Sampras is someone who rarely gives statements in the world of tennis, and when he says something, he is being listened to with attention.
"The very fact that I overtook him on the eternal list of Grand Slams, by weeks at number one and other records I made, is really something that impresses me and means a lot. His words have an extremely strong echo, not only with me, but simply in the tennis world, because he is one of the greatest players of all time. If he says something like that, then it has a lot of weight", Djokovic concluded.
