Syla is a member of the Kosovo Assembly from the ranks of President Hashim Thaci's party, the PDK, and is also Thaci's uncle.

Syla has been taken to a detention center in Pristina after surrendering to the police on the border with Albania. He is expected to be brought before a judge later in the afternoon.

A warrant for Syla's arrest was issued on suspicion that he headed a group of criminals "from Kosovo and Serbia" that allegedly falsified documents in order to sell public and private land in the vicinity of Pristina, worth EUR 30 million.

Earlier in the week, EULEX and Kosovo police arrested six other suspects, who have been remanded in custody.

In a statement he gave to media in Kosovo earlier, Syla said he was "not guilty" and would "very soon" prove that the accusations against him are false.
