"Libyan kidnappers who took Serbians were after Ukrainians"

The kidnappers now want those under arrest to be set free in order to release the Serbians - but it turned out that the Libyan citizens in question had been arrested and are being held in Ukraine.

The paper writes that negotiations are ongoing, with Serbia "making maximum efforts" to convince the kidnappers, via the Sabratha authorities, that the members of their organization are not imprisoned in Serbia.

Other security services active in Libya "should join the negotiations at any moment," according to the article, which added that "assistance is expected also from Russia and Ukraine, to help the truth become apparent."

"Our operatives and the MFA Secretary Veljko Odalovic are at the scene talking to the Council of Security in Sabratha, but also to the Libyan authorities," the daily said it learned unofficially, and added:

"Libyan officials, through some people, are in contact with the kidnappers who want Serbia to free their brothers in arms and cousins in exchange for the two (Serbians). However, those Libyans are jailed in Ukraine. Serbia's hands are tied now because we have nothing to do with the whole situation that resulted in the kidnapping of our citizens."

The Serbian intelligence officers and Odalovic traveled to Libya after the kidnappers refused to accept Serbian Ambassador Oliver Potezica's explanation that the Libyans they want freed are not held in Serbia.

"The group that kidnapped Sladjana and Jovica now wants to secure the release of their compatriots from Ukraine, through Serbia. The situation is very complicated. Many people are taking part in the effort to free our people and we hope for the best. We know they are alive and are not being mistreated. For the moment, that's what matters the most," the newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying.

The Serbian officers and Odalovic on Thursday visited the kidnapping site.
