Anniversary of murders of Serb youths in enclave in Kosovo

A church memorial service for the victims - Ivan Jovovic (19) and Pantelija Dakic (12) - was led today in Gorazdevac by SPC Bishop of Raska and Prizren Teodosije.

The commemoration was attended by representatives of the Serbian Government's Office for Kosovo and Serb representatives in Kosovo institutions, who together with the victims' relatives and friends visited the graves, and a memorial to the victims killed in the 1999 NATO bombing.

Despite the offered reward of a million euros and the promise of the UN mission, UNMIK, "to leave no stone unturned" in their effort to find the killers, they remain unknown to this day.

The prosecutor of the Special Prosecution Office of Kosovo closed the case in 2010. The EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, announced at the time this was done because the police investigation did not lead to any results or potential suspects, adding it would be reopened if new information appeared.

Beside the two murdered boys, four others were wounded at Bistrica 12 years ago today: Bogdan Bukumiric, 14 years old at the time, Marko Bogicevic (12), Dragana Srbljak (13) and Djordje Ugrenovic (20).

In the wake of the attack, UNMIK said that an unknown number of people hiding in the bushes opened fire from AK-47s targeting a group of about 50 Serb children and youths from Gorazdevac.

A Kosovo police in the investigation examined 75 witnesses, and searched about 100 houses, but without concrete results.

The killings were condemned by local and international officials, and a UN Security Council meeting was held in the wake of the tragedy.

The murders in Gorazdevac are considered to be among the four most serious crimes against Serbs in Kosovo committed after the arrival of international missions to the province. The killers remain unpunished in the three other cases: the Staro Gracko massacre of farmers, the murder of the Stevic family in Obilic, and the bomb attack on a Nis Ekspress bus near Podujevo.

Today, less than 1,000 Serbs remain in Gorazdevac, completely surrounded by ethnic Albanians.
