The police said that the robber entered the house masked and armed and proceeded to "physically abuse" the owner, a 38-year-old man, and his grandmother, demanding that they hand him over money.

"At one point there was physical contact, after which the owner of the house took a pistol out of a wardrobe and fired one shot into the assailant, who succumbed to his injuries instantly," a statement said.

The police were present as a deputy to the Kragujevac higher public prosecutor investigated the scene. The homeowner will be handed over to the Higher Public Prosecution in Kragujevac during the day on Tuesday, the police said.

Although the media initially reported that the robber was a former member of the police, this later proved to be false information.
